Three police officers were killed and no fewer than 15 additional individuals were hurt in a seemingly deliberate blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in Italy's north.

Sequence of Events

The explosion occurred as police and firefighters entered the property in the vicinity of the Verona region to carry out an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.

Each of the three victims who died served in the Italian military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

A man and a woman got detained at the location and one more individual who escaped subsequent to the blast was apprehended shortly later. All three have been admitted to the hospital.

The detonation could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and photographs from the scene showed the building turned into a heap of debris.

“We are in a period of mourning,” stated Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who added that attempts had been made to evict the three family members in the earlier times.

Background and Motive

The president of the Veneto area, President Zaia, said the farmhouse was subject to an removal notice due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the property owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to speak to the family members who had secured themselves into the property. When the officers came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the siblings set off the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief Claudio Papagno stated to news outlets.

A propane tank had been ignited, and the blast precisely impacted our officers,” he explained.

Incendiary devices were also discovered at the site, the interior minister confirmed.

Casualties and Damage

Injured individuals by the incident included an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as three members of Italy's state police and a fire services member.

As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.

The official thought the detonation had happened on a level above the access point and told the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the incident, he said members had “heard a whistle, likely the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Community Reaction

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents stated to reporters, adding that the three had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in honoring the three men who had died in the performance of their duties.
