Big 12 Commissioner Labels Notre Dame Comments After CFP Snub as ‘Totally Out of Bounds’

At a public criticism, Big 12 Conference commissioner stated that Notre Dame's AD, Pete Bevacqua, was “entirely out of bounds” for his criticisms concerning the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

The Source of the Tension

Notre Dame has a gridiron scheduling agreement with the ACC and is a participating member in other sports. The AD has contended that the ACC hurt Notre Dame’s chances to qualify for the College Football Playoff, instead choosing to campaigning for the spot of the University of Miami.

“They does great things for Notre Dame, but we bring tremendous football value to the ACC, and we didn’t understand why you would go out of your way to try to hurt us in this procedure,” Bevacqua said.

Miami eventually received the CFP invitation over Notre Dame, mostly due to winning the direct meeting between the two teams. Notre Dame's AD also claimed that the ACC ran a coordinated social media push over several weeks demonstrating its support for Miami.

A Strong Rebuke

Later on Tuesday, the Big 12 commissioner spoke about the criticism at the Sports Business Journal’s Intercollegiate Athletics Forum.

“In my view his behavior has been unacceptable,” Yormark said. “He is totally out of bounds in his method and if he was in the same room, I’d tell him the same thing.”

The response is especially notable given Bevacqua’s unique position. He sits on the College Football Playoff Management Committee with the ten FBS conference commissioners, representing the concerns of independent Notre Dame.

Past Support and Speculative Moves

Yormark further remarked the assistance the ACC offered Notre Dame in the Covid-affected 2020 season, giving the Irish a full ACC schedule and a berth in its title game.

“It has been unacceptable,” he said again. “It’s been unacceptable going after the ACC commissioner, when they rescued Notre Dame during Covid...”

Speculation had spread about Notre Dame potentially leaving the ACC and aligning with the Big 12. Yet, Yormark's pointed comments on Tuesday seem to make such a move less likely in the immediate future.

Notre Dame, who reached the CFP final last season, have indicated they plan to decline a bowl game after failing to qualify this year.
